Outline for critical analysis
Section 1: Introduction – what is the context of the article? Title of the article, author of the article, Is the author(s) a credible source? Why or why not? Leave out the overall evaluation and background information, as this will come in a different part.
Section 2: Summary – State the authors main claim. Describe the main piece of evidence listed in the article that supports the authors claim. What does the author say are the reasons you should except their opinion about this issue?
Section 3: what is your evaluation /response? Provide an evaluation of the argument. What did the author do well? Not so well? Identify and explain any faulty or weak logic Provide an evaluation of the argument. What did the author do well? Not so well? Identify and explain any faulty or weak logic/reasoning used in the article. Is the evidence true/Reliable? Is it relevant? Is it sufficient? Are there any hidden assumptions, logical fallacies or emotional appeals? What more could have been said, if anything? What are your concerns about the authors interpretation, approach, or conclusion? Would you recommend this article to be used for research on your topic?
