ETHICAL DILEMMAS
• The patient has been prescribed medicine which is customary for their condition. It is not experimental, but they refuse to take it because they do not like the way it feels. What do you do as a nurse? Which of the ANA code of ethics are you following?
Briefly describe both sides of the dilemma. Include major for and against arguments.
Form an opinion regarding this dilemma and explain your choice.
Be sure to answer the following questions:
• If it’s all up to you, what would you do? Why? If you aren’t in charge, what may you do?
• Which of the ANA codes of Ethics supports your opinion?
• Cite other sources which back up your opinion. These may be Federal, State, or Local laws, institutional policies, generally accepted societal/moral tenets or scientific data
• Is there a cost to operationalizing your opinion? Is the cost generally positive or negative?
This could be legal consequences, standing in your community or family, publicity, job-related changes or many other things.
• Are you aware of someone else who has shared your viewpoint and acted on it? How did their stance end up?
