The “Other” or the process of “othering” is a label given to entities that display characteristics different or foreign to the self. The “Other” is outside what is considered normal by an individual’s perception of reality or society, and so “the other” becomes alienated and/or threatening.
Select one character from Macbeth who is an example of “the other” or experiences the process of “othering.” Analyze to what extent the concept of “the other” or “othering” affects an understanding of that character. You may choose to think about one or more of the following…
How much power or status your selected character demonstrates or is allowed to possess throughout the novel
How your selected character is described in the novel or describes themselves
How your selected character is treated in the novel by other characters (what is done to them, said to them, etc.)
How much sympathy does your selected character experiences in the novel from other characters or the society they live in
Etc.! (i.e. Something else you think of that we didn’t think of and list above 🙂
