learned in lecture that the word “Enlightenment” refers both to a historical
movement and a process of knowledge. Enlightenment is a struggle, an attitude
toward progress. Eclaircissement (French) or enlightenment, “age of reason”
(English), Thomas Paine (the illumination), behind all of these terms is the
image of knowledge as light—going back to Plato. In this paper make a case for
why we need to read Kant, Voltaire and Goethe in 2022. Focus on specific
qualities put forth in each of the works, especially pertaining to public and
private uses of reason and optimism.
