Paper Assignment for The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende:
Please read Isabel Allende’s novel The House of the Spirits and write an essay on the following topic.
In what ways does Isabel Allende’s novel The House of the Spirits illustrate some of the primary issues, themes, and problems of twentieth-century Latin American history? Explain how the story of the Trueba family relates to what you have learned about the history of Latin America, and about Chile in particular. This is not a book report. It is a critical analysis essay that evaluates a work of fiction as a historical primary source document. For example, you may choose to explore how the novel illustrates the ways in which gender, and/or race, and/or class, and/or religion have shaped the social, political, and economic history of Latin America and the history of Chile in particular.
