Review 4.4. “The Trolley Dilemma” on pages 59-60. Choose one version of the dilemma and identify which one it is. Then discuss what action you would choose if you were the conductor, switchman, or spectator. Discuss your reasoning behind your choice using concepts learned in this class. The goal of this discussion is to think in terms of ethics when making choices.
You need to write an original post and respond to two classmates to receive full credit. Your response to classmates must be substantive and show evidence of reflection and thought. Feedback should add new information, or in some way enhance the learning of others in the course.
Please complete your original post by Wednesday at 11:59 pm EST and your two replies to classmates by Sunday at 11:59 pm EST.
NOTE FROM PROFF:
A clarification: The question is NOT which scenario you would rather be in. NEITHER is it a choice between pushing the fat man and flipping the switch. Instead, there are three distinct scenarios. You may answer what you would do in any of the three scenarios. For example, if the only way to stop the trolley (and save five people) was to push a fat man onto the tracks, would/should you do it?
By the way, the reason why it is sometimes called the ‘Trolley Problem’ (rather than just the trolley dilemmas) is because it is puzzling why the answers would be different in each scenario.
A related scenario is called ‘Transplant’:
Five patients are fatally ill and can only be saved by organ transplants, but no organs are available. A healthy person walks into the hospital for a routine checkup who happens to be a tissue match for all five people. Should you kill that person and take the person’s organs to save the five people? The puzzle, again, is if the answer is ‘no’ in Transplant, then why would it be ‘yes’ in Switch?
