“You can choose to write a research paper on a topic related to participatory practices in art. This is a 3-level class, so I assume everyone has written a research paper in a prior requisite art course. The most important thing is to find a topic that will sustain your attention and allow you to generate new ideas and arguments. As I see it, you have three options: you could write a thematic paper using a group of artists that have worked in a similar way (for example, a paper on historical reenactments in art, as we saw with Deller); you could write about a single artist where you explore one or more participatory-like projects; or, you could write a more theoretical research paper—for example, something on the philosopher Jacques Rançiere and his influence on participatory practices. This last option would be the most demanding and abstract, so please keep that in mind. For ideas on all three options, I recommend perusing Claire Bishop’s anthology Participation (Whitechapel, 2006). ”
The instruction of the paper
you will start writing your research paper. Please make sure you place your artists or themes within a historical context of participatory practices. Above all, make sure you make an argument with your research. In other words, having a thesis is a must.
The paper should be 5-7 pages in length, 12 Times font, double-spaced with standard paragraph indentations (no spaces between paragraphs), and proper citations and bibliography. Please use the Chicago Manual of Style (email a librarian if you need help with citations or your bibliography)
