Performance indicators are key metrics to measure a staff’s capacity to meet the jobs’ needs and requirements (Penner, 2016). According to Penner, some of the key performance indicators are staffing indicators, performance indicators, and patient flow. Performance indicators that I would monitor at work are staff productivity and the average length of stay (ALOS) of patients in the hospital. Staff productivity would be monitored in terms of their output. A set average quota of cases will be reviewed (utilization review) in a week. If the nurses meet the number of cases done, they meet their required productivity. Quality assurance must also be in place to check whether the reviews are done according to organizational standards to ensure that productivity meets quality.
On the other hand, the average length of stay (ALOS) will also be monitored in terms of the number of days a patient stays in the hospital. The ALOS is calculated by adding the total number of days stay for each discharged patient per month and dividing that by the number of discharged patients in a month (American Health Information Management Association, n.d.). A shorter ALOS would mean that better patient care quality has been provided. The ALOS shows the efficiency of nursing performance since early safe discharge would mean faster resolution of a patient’s healthcare issues.
