For this assignment, assume you serve as a member on the Board of Directors for 1% for the Planet. Write a persuasive recruitment letter to your favorite small business convincing that business to become a member of the organization. Your mission is to write a business letter to the owner of a local small business outlining arguments in favor of becoming a member of 1% for the Planet.
You will “reserve” your local small business by email by 09/20 at Canvas. You cannot choose the same small business that has already been chosen by any of your classmates. List of students local business will be posted at Canvas so that everyone sees it.
Your letter will be graded using Ramapo’s business letter writing rubric (see p.12). Students may wish to
conduct some brief research through an online search or library materials to see examples of acceptable
business letter formats. In addition, there are suitable business letter templates available using MS Word.
o Business Letter Parts (in order from top to bottom): 1-2 pages single spaced.
Return address – address of letter writer.
First and last name, address, city, state and zip code.
The date
Inside address of recipient (who you are writing the letter to)

Salutation – If the person is not a friend, write “Dear Mr. Smith”.
If the person is a friend, you may say “Dear Sally”.
Body of Letter – the body of a typical business letter has three parts (easiest to
accomplish in three paragraphs).
The first part is “why am I writing to you,” the second is “what’s in it for you” (where
you have to sell what you want), and the third part is advising them of when and how
you will be following up.
Closing – “sincerely”, or “best regards”, “yours truly”, etc…
