Persuasive Speech/bodybuilding

Persuasive Speech
Overview
This assignment is designed to demonstrate your ability to create, organize, deliver, and analyze a
persuasive speech. See rubric for specific assignment requirements. Although you will be evaluated on
your delivery, this assignment is weighted toward the canon of invention, arrangement, and style.
Special Requirements
• Focus on a claim of fact, value, or policy. (One claim, not all).
• Minimum of 8 in-text citations from a minimum of five credible, relevant, and appropriate
sources (references). Failure to meet this threshold results in an automatic deduction of 10%
of speech grade. References need to be in APA format.
• Use oral citation and warrant claims to increase your credibility during delivery.
• Use a pattern of arrangement that is specific to persuasion: MMS, compare-contrast,
comparative advantage, refutation, problem-cause-solution, or pro-con.
– If you feel a topical, process, or other pattern previously covered better suits your
speech, you can use this. Provide a note during upload of assignment that explains to
your instructor your rationale for not using a persuasive pattern.
• Minimum of three strategically used figures of speech (rhetorical figures). These need to be
identified in your preparation outline using bold, underline, and unique color font. Failure to
meet this threshold results in an automatic deduction of 5% of speech grade.
• CRITICAL >> Highlight one section of the speech that showcases what you think is your
strongest or best supported argument based on Toulmin: claim, data, warrant, backing,
qualifier, warrant. (See also “Argument Assessment” Assignment for an example). Your
instructor will assess this for rubric item: “Claims and data are warranted/supported and
void of fallacies”
• You may speak from your working/preparation outline or any other style of outline you
prefer; however, your speech needs to appear practiced.

Here’s what you need to do:
1. Read this prompt.
2. Read and watch the sample claims of fact and claims of policy speeches provided.
3. Write a preparation (working) outline in full sentence format. This outline should be in APA
format (for citations and references; no need for cover page, running header, etc.). It needs to
have enough content to produce a speech that is approximately 8 minutes in length (not
shorter than 7 minutes and not longer than 9 minutes).
4. Revise and copy edit your preparation outline. It is highly recommended that you get
feedback from others before submission. Note that the grade is primarily based on evaluation
of the working (preparation) outline, not delivery.
5. Prepare a speaking outline. This one will NOT be evaluated by your instructor but will improve
delivery.
