Peter Barry’s Post-Colonial Criticism in Crossing the River

Crossing the River is
a book which blends a number of theoretical perspectives, more importantly,
postcolonialism and postmodernism. Our reading will be centered in a cluster of
ideologies, among them postcolonialism, but also gay and lesbian studies
theories. Students are encouraged to write an essay on this text which attempts
to explain structures in the text, characters, or events, from a
postcolonial/gay and lesbian studies perspective.

The assignments must be
between 1000 and 1200 words and deal directly with some aspect of the
assignment topic posted by the instructors. The students are to
write an assignment for each of the five books you will be reading in this
course. These assignments are to be written with an introduction, discussion,
and conclusion. Use Times New Roman, font 12. Black ink. Do not use the
personal pronoun “I”. It is important that you write objectively, that you do
not generalize, and that you use formal academic English. Focus on analysis.
Do not overindulge in description.

Structure should be straightforward (stick to just a certain theory in postcolonial critism I.E Orientalism)

Example on topic that you can write about is: Focus on Orientalism and talk about how the “other” is represented in the white characters i.e Edward and Joyce.

Intro – introduce what you are going to write about (thesis)

Main Paragraph 1 about certain character/sequence in the novel – apply certain postcolonial critism concept to that sequence/character and how it complies with your thesis statement

Main Paragraph 2: about certain character/sequence in the novel – apply certain postcolonial critism concept to that sequence/character and how it complies with your thesis statement

Main Paragraph 3: about certain character/sequence in the novel – apply certain postcolonial critism concept to that sequence/character and how it complies with your thesis statement
