Your primary goal in this assignment is to defend a thesis. You will accomplish this by (1) clearly
presenting and explaining an argument, (2) clearly presenting and explaining what you take to be the two strongest objections to it, and finally (3) clearly evaluating the argument and the objections. In doing so, you should make clear to your reader whether you believe that the argument is sound and why.
Your paper should be 5-6 pages long and concern a topic involving ethics in business. DO NOT
EXCEED 6 PAGES. Elise will deduct points if you exceed the allotted space. Your selected topic may be
either (1) a topic that we have discussed (or will discuss) in class or (2) a topic that we have not discussed in class but is still relevant to the course content. If you choose the first option, you do not need to obtain permission from myself to have your topic approved. However, if you choose the second option, you must have your topic approved (either meeting in person during my office hours or over email).
As always, please feel free to come and talk with Elise or myself about material in the course that you are interested in. If you are unsure about what to write about, these meetings can be especially helpful. If you talk with us, we can suggest possible topics, arguments, and (perhaps) even specific readings that you can look into when conducting your research.
The overall structure of your long paper should be the same as your short paper (with the same section headings). So, you should:
(1) Have an introduction in which you state your thesis
(2) Extract the argument in question
(3) Explain the rationales in support of the premises
(4) Evaluate whether the argument is sound or unsound
(5) Have a conclusion in which you summarize what you have shown and indicate further
questions or lines of inquiry
