STUDENT 1
What is the theodicy based on free will? Does it succeed? Explain.
The theodicy based on free will attempts to explain why God allows moral evil. By giving us the freedom of choice, He in turn gave us the ability to do moral evil. But the the freedom of choice is what lets us do the most good and a world with that amount of good and the resulting evil is better than a world without both. I do believe the theodicy based on free will succeeds because a 3-O God would understand that the beings He created would love him more if they knew they were given the choice to do so. Additionally, this better sets up the argument that the existence of God should be argued on the premise of why natural evil exists. God would not have to limit our ability to choose in order to eradicate natural disasters or disease.
(7) Do you find the problem of evil, in any of its various forms, compelling? Why or why not?
I find the arguments between moral and natural evil compelling. I appreciate how the theodicy of free will helps to argue the fact that moral evil has to exist and leaves me with the question of how can someone believe in a 3-O God but accept that natural disasters exist. I appreciate the idea that I have the ability to choose what I do everyday. What I eat, how well I work and how I want to treat others. I am human, and I will make mistakes. Sometimes my choices will hurt others and therefore cause some amount of suffering (evil). I think the free will arguments sufficiently explain why this is necessary. But why does an omnipotent and omni-benevolent God allow tornados to exist? Why do hurricanes and earthquakes devastate so many. There are enough problems in the world, we definitely didn’t need natural disasters. I also don’t see how the argument that even natural evil is a result of our free will. The idea that fallen angels have something to do with it still implies that there is a God that has a choice to do something about it and chooses not too. Or, if you connect back to Adam and Eve mistakes leading us to be expelled from Eden, why would a omni-benevolent God punish so many for the mistakes of two.
STUDENT 2
Theodicy based on free will shows that the universe contains both good and evil. It fails because God cannot simultaneously prohibit evil and provide people with free will.
7. In my opinion, theodicy is extremely compelling. If people had free will and could prevent bad things from happening, the world would be even worse. Without rules and laws, the world would be a violent and deadly place. Every day, homicides occur despite the existence of laws. If everyone possessed free will and there were no constraints on evil, the world would be a much more dangerous place.
