As accountants, we learn the internal controls that discourage low-level fraud & corruption, and the accountability that discourages high-level corruption. By impeding corruption, we are helping ensure not just vague ideas like ‘the public trust’, but also scary issues, like national security.
To see an illustration of how corruption is so dangerous please watch this TED talk (from 2015), and 2021 interview with Sarah Chayes, who lived in Afghanistan for ten years and advised the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff (ie, US military command).
