I’d like to emphasize that you should write/ present about something you care about. I’ve attempted to word the question to be broad so that you can focus on anything you like. For the op-ed especially, you should probably focus on an issue that is relevant to cities today, or Halifax specifically. Just make sure you identify lessons from the history of cities in your argument. You need not reference ancient history. For many issues (such as bike lanes), you can focus on history over the last few decades. *You do not need to reference anything from lectures.* Uruk probably won’t be relevant if you’re making an argument about cities today.
For the op-ed, remember that you are not writing an academic piece: you are not being marked on any references. You are being marked on your ability to make a convincing point, briefly. It’s a different skill set. You can include a hyperlink if you want to reference useful statistics from a specific report, or to quote an authority figure who said something that supports your point, but otherwise, you don’t need references.
