In every city we have addressed so far – Cairo, Istanbul, Algiers, Jerusalem, as well as others – we see different political dynamics at play, which can be both large and small, as driven by state actors, international actors, and different groups or kinds of residents: from colonialism to redrawing municipal boundaries, from building informal housing to enacting neoliberal visions towards a ‘global city,’ among other examples. Each of these results in physical and social changes, whether in razing and rebuilding neighborhoods, displacing people, creating social divisions, and otherwise. Drawing on class readings, analyze how political decisions and interests work to impact the urban landscape of two different cities (or parts of cities) that we have covered in class thus far by assessing specific physical and social changes that result from those political dynamics.
