politics and socio-cultural experiences of the 1970’s

Using three (3) of the films screened in class in the second part of the course: Network, Saturday Night Fever, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, and Capricorn One, write a well-supported essay discussing how the films you have chosen demonstrate and articulate the politics and socio-cultural experiences of the 1970’s covered in the chapters associated with those films and the class discussion. Cite the textbook, class discussions if relevant, and elements from the films (plot, scenes, characters, dialog) to support your arguments. DO NOT USE other outside sources please. To bind your arguments about the selected films (do not examine them in separate or isolated sub-headings, but compare and contrast in one cohesive essay) attempt to find common threads or subjects in your films beyond their specific linkage to the themes of the book chapters. Examples: image of women, image of men, view of/trust in government, critical views of society, individual alienation, progressive change vs static outcomes, race and race relations, issues of class and economics, etc. SELECT ONE OR TWO TOPICS AND EXPLORE HOW THEY ARE ADDRESSED IN THE FILMS OF YOUR CHOICE (Don´t select one topic for some films and another for the others, but rather focus on how the films you chose reflect on all the topics you chose). Since the films you are using will be of diverse genres and styles, they may express different values, or different ways to “say” similar things. You should address this important aspect in your comparison. Please include an introduction in which you state which films you are discussing and your specific focus and a conclusion. Your paper should be 8 to 10 full pages, typed and double-spaced, with one inch margins. Your references to quotes or concepts from the text or lectures are to be given in parenthetical notes, i.e.: (Text, page number); (lecture, date). Please remember: ALL film titles are underlined or italicized.
