POLITICS OF MEDIA

POLITICS OF MEDIA
FALL 2021
The paper for our class requires you to think critically about media and the impact media has on the ways we view the world (people, places, things) and how we locate ourselves in it. There are no right or wrong answers. Your grade, therefore, relies on your ability to critically analyze the material and how your cited sources support your position.
Choose one of the following:
Public relations (PR) professionals manage their clients’ interactions with media personnel to help them create and maintain a positive public reputation. If you’re applying for a position as a PR professional and as a requirement to be considered for the position, you must submit a detailed PR campaign that will convince consumers to not buy EV’s (electric vehicles) and continue purchasing gas fueled cars well into the future. Explain why you think this plan could be successful and how you would go about “engineering public consent” to get buy-in from consumers.
We live in a world of digital technologies that raise the specter that perhaps Ray Bradbury’s then science fiction dystopia novel Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953, was ahead of its time. It’s now 2021 and you’re writing your own similarly themed book. Taking aim specifically at technological advances, what technologies exist in your future world? What are the concerns your book addresses about where technology has taken society in your future world? Is there a happy (positive) ending to your story? Explain.
Disruption is a term used to describe when an industry is forced to change because of new technology or new business practices. According to our textbook, “the disruption to the traditional recorded music industry has been monumental in scope and suggests that other media technologies may well be disrupted themselves.” Using the yes/no arguments addressing streaming and the future of the music industry as your guide, explain why and how disruption to one industry triggers disruptions to others. You can, of course, include the music industry but this essay requires you to think beyond the music industry and explore other disruptions (i.e., the introduction of television in the early 1950s) and the impact these disruptions had (and/or continue to have) on pre-existing mediums.
NOTE: Your paper must be a Word document, 6 pages in length, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font, and must cite a minimum of five (5) sources, including, but not limited to, relevant assigned readings.
