One primary source that is a piece of popular culture of your choosing. For your piece of popular culture, you may choose something that we have read together in class, or you may propose a popular culture piece of your own. A piece of popular culture could be any of the following: a movie, video game, TV series, web series, young adult fiction, a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, etc.
Two secondary sources from your own research. This could be a reputable journalistic source about the fandom or your social justice issue that you find online, a scholarly source you find through the library, a YouTube video essay, or sources published by professional organizations. For one of your writing journals, you will locate and outline one of your secondary sources for this assignment as a way of getting started in your research process. These sources should say something about the intended fandom of your popular culture piece, or the social justice issue you see in it.
Topic: A social justice issue that plays out in your primary source. Be specific.
Position/thesis: Your must evaluate how well your piece of popular culture speaks to social justice: is social justice possible through popular culture alone? How will the fandom of this piece of popular culture benefit from knowing about the connection to this issue?
Audience: A fan of your primary sources who believes they have a grasp of what this piece of popular culture means. Why should this fan cultivate a better sense of how a social justice issue relates to this primary source? What does this community value about this primary source?
