SAMPLE INTRODUCTION
“Solving Homelessness from a Complex Systems Perspective: Insights for Prevention Responses,”
by Patrick J. Fowler
(1) Americans have always looked for a solution to decrease homelessness in the United States. Many Americans believe that the main causes of homelessness are joblessness, the lack of education, and even laziness. The US Jobless Rate makes it seem like having a place to live is a directly connected to one’s job. (2) However, people do not have to become homeliness in the first place. It takes planning for the future to avoid homeliness. Even when people go to school and get jobs that pay well, they still may find themselves out on the street. (3) This argument is important because there are other issues that are just as important as having a good job and an education to avoid homelessness. There is hope for the American people to avoid the ongoing problems of homeliness by seeking out services and assistance from federal and local efforts to house the homeless. Although efforts to fight homelessness are strained, people in need should be diligent in their efforts to find permanent shelter. (4) In the article, “Solving Homelessness from a Complex Systems Perspective: Insights for Prevention Responses,” author Patrick J. Fowler emphasizes that (1) homelessness represents an enduring public health threat facing most communities, (2) that children, families, and marginalized adults are most affected by hopelessness, and (3) that a constant demand for housing assistance strains attempts to prevent homelessness.

Looking Ahead
• The Thesis Statement is the map to your Essay.
• So your next paragraph (Body Paragraph #1) must begin with item #1 in your Thesis Statement.
• Body Paragraph #2 must begin with item #2 in your Thesis Statement.
• Body Paragraph #3 must begin with item #3 in your Thesis Statement.
Next, write (3) three Topic Sentences, one for each of your three Body Paragraphs. Your Topic Sentences MUST match the points in your Thesis Statement, say what SHOULD or MUST be done to SOLVE the problem of poverty. They MUST read exactly like the Examples on the Discussion Page on the Rough Draft Assignment.
Now, write your Introduction based on the directions above, with the (3) three-part Thesis Statement as the last sentence of the Introduction.
