Psychoanalytic Approaches Pt. 2 Background (Please Read**)
This week we continue our exploration of psychoanalytic approaches to leadership through a scenario where you will be placed in the role of consultant for an organization that is doing its best to apply new perspectives in its leadership development and mentoring programs. The organization is a fictitious company known as Antiquus, Inc. Antiquus is a 20-year-old firm that owns and manages a group of high-end art galleries located in Portland, OR., Jackson Hole, WY., Santa Fe, NM., Washington D.C., and New York City. The company has done a good job of adapting to the COVID crisis but is always looking for ways to make the company a healthy and meaningful place to work. The CEO position is divided between two roles: 1) Chief Operations Officer (Ruth) and, 2) Chief Financial Officer (Demetri). The chief executives get along well and have an enviable working relationship. Middle management of the company includes five gallery managers and one production manager. Each manager has a staff of 7-9 sales associates. You know one of the managers and they have gotten you an amazing leadership consulting opportunity at Antiquus. You have met Ruth and Demitri three times and have a good rapport with them. They are impressed with your leadership knowledge and are eager to hear your ideas.

Powerpoint Assignment Presentation: Psychoanalytic Approaches for Leadership Training and Development (Please Read**)
As part of a recent professional development seminar, Antiquus gallery managers read a study from Stanford University that found that the workplace is the 5th leading cause of death in America. Most of the workplace related deaths in America are brought on by despair. This means that stressful, toxic, anxious organizations lead to an early death because of increased depression, drug and alcohol abuse, relationship problems, and even suicide (Pfeffer, 2018). The article was a real wakeup call to the managers and they now want to make sure Antiquus does all it can to address stress and toxicity in the workplace and for the organization to be known as an authentically healthy, supportive place to work. As their leadership consultant, they have asked you to prepare an executive level presentation on psychological perspectives of leadership that will be used to inform a new leadership training and development academy at Antiquus with the mission of promoting healthy, effective leadership practices. Context matters in this assignment; Antiquus is a luxury retail operation. Do some research on retail management and sales performance. Think of some hypothetical examples of psychodynamic issues that might occur in a high-end sales environment. Include the examples in your presentation and use them focus on two or three key psychodynamic theories. Lastly, include some discussion prompts and short activities for applied learning in the training session.
Know your audience (see the description in this week’s overview for more information on Antiquus). This is a sophisticated company that values quality, be sure to match your presentation style to the type of client you are working with on this project. In this case, your PowerPoint or video should be clean, crisp, and free of wordy slides.
