Primary Source Essay #2 – Assignment Info
With this second Primary Source Essay, we will be using a primary source to examine the nature of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and how it compared with President Herbert Hoover’s efforts to combat the Great Depression.
You have two sources to use for this essay. The first is Hoover’s 1931 State of the Union Message (like many presidents before him, Hoover chose to deliver a written report to Congress rather than give a speech); this is the primary source. The second source is a website that lists some information about many of FDR’s New Deal programs; this is a secondary source.
Your task is to use both sources to answer the following questions: If someone suggested to you that compared to the New Deal, the Hoover administration did nothing to try and fix the Great Depression, how would you respond? Are they right or wrong? Use the two sources (and only these two; nothing else) to prove your answer. A good essay will focus on one or two major areas for analysis.
What to use: Only these two sources; you can’t use any other sources. When you cite the sources, use (Source 1) and (Source 2) for your citations; any other type of citation or citation content will result in a lower grade.
What to submit: A two-page essay formatted as required in the General Formatting Requirements (In attahcements) and following the General Writing Requirements (In attachments).
