Principles of Health Information Management

Identify primary and secondary data sources and users of the medical record.
This assignment addresses the following AHIMA Entry-Level Competencies:
Associate I.6 Describe components of data dictionaries and data sets.
Associate I.6 (DM Only) Evaluate data dictionaries and data sets for compliance with governance standards.
As an HIM Professional, you will be using multiple data sets. It is important to understand the purpose, goals, and contents of health care data sets.
Step One: Perform a web search and locate information on HEDIS, UHDDS, and OASIS
Step Two: Review the information in Chapter Five: Clinical Terminologies, Classifications, and Code Systems
Step Three: Using the Table feature of Microsoft Word or Excel, create a table that contains information about 6 different health care data sets (three of which must be HEDIS, UHDDS, and OASIS). The columns of the spreadsheet should be:
Name of Data Set
Purpose
Primary Users
Unique Features
How It is Used
Be sure that if you use Excel, the spreadsheet is formatted as a table. Use “Wrap Text” and other formatting features of Excel.
Step Four: Analyze the data sets in order to provide a comprehensive comparison and contrast of them including the pros and cons of using these standardized data sets in healthcare.
Step Five: Submit your paper/spreadsheet for grading.
Your assignment should include APA formatting including references and citations. If you use Excel, merge cells to create a large text area to hold your references.
