Methods Section
Assignment:
The methods section of a scientific
paper is one of the most important elements of the communication of your
work. Readers need to know that your
process was well thought out, appropriate, and able to be reproduced if
needed. A weak methods section will create
more questions than answers after reading and will not inspire confidence in
the results of the work.
Every methods section is unique to the particular study
design, so there is not a one-size-fits-all template to generate a quality
methods section. Elements you should
consider are below:
·
What is your overall methodological approach to
collecting your data?
o
Qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods?
·
Why is your chosen research method(s)
appropriate (provide evidence)?
·
Description of your measurement tools/modalities,
materials, and equipment.
o
Why they are relevant, valid, and reliable?
·
How did you determine the composition of your
sample? Why?
·
How will you analyze your data? Why did you choose this data analysis
strategy?
o
How does this align with your study
objectives/aims?
The methods section should be clear
and contain a sufficient amount of information to describe and validate all of
your investigative actives. The elements
are described above just provide a general framework of what should be included
in a methods section; the content will be determined by the complexity of the
investigation. Please make sure you are
paying attention to the formatting of the headings (i.e., Level 1, 2, 3, etc.)
of your sections.
Please refer to the examples/resources in Canvas for both
quantitative and qualitative examples of the presentation of methods sections
in scientific papers.
This assignment is due on 2/20 by 23:59 as a Word file
upload on Canvas. APA 7th
edition formatting is to be used on this assignment with your name, course, and
section in the header (no title page required).
