Choose from one of the three topics in the directions and write an essay on it.
A typical understanding of the prophets says, “The prophetic writings are basically all the same. They either are predictions of the future, or they say, ‘Change your evil ways. If you’re good, God will save you.’” In other words, people tend to not distinguish between theprophetic writings. We’ve seen that there are differencesas we have looked at Amos, Hosea, Nahum, Habakkuk, Ezekiel, and Haggai. Differences between them can be seen in historical, political, literary, or aesthetic factors. They focus on radically different values, they try to reach their audience in very different ways, and they have different tones.
Write a paper on one of the following general themes. You will have to develop a specific thesis:
-How prophets make their case through the literaryapproach they use (looking at the literary styles, approaches, and genres of 3-4 of the prophets)
-Why an understanding of history and historical factors matter in understanding the prophets (again, look at 3-4 prophets)
-Which prophet—of the six that we’ve read—speaks to you most strikingly? There are a couple of challenges with this essay. First, make sure that you do include comparison at least to four others (show your familiarity with others, in part by noting why you didn’t choose them). Second, make sure that your thesis is specific and that the structure of your argument is clear. If you choose this, focus on a variety of factors, including, for instance, values, literary style, theology, political context, and tone. One of the prophets may just seem more applicable to you or your life.
