The first part of your research proposal will involve identifying a research question to pursue for the remainder of the semester and conducting a review of the literature corresponding to your chosen research question. Every new study does not have to reinvent the wheel – there have likely been studies conducted in the past which focus on similar research questions. It is important to identify those studies and discuss what they can tell us for a variety of reasons: 1) It gives us an idea of what is currently known or unknown about a given issue, 2) it can give use a baseline from which we can compare the results of our own study, and 3) it can suggest directions for future research. In essence, a good literature review contextualizes your own study. Your proposal will include the following elements:

When I say that it will lead up to presenting your research question, I am literally asking you to conclude this section with a statement along the lines of “The purpose of this proposal is to pursue the following research question: [insert your research question here].” Do not finish this section without stating your research question – I’m serious.
