Psalm 141:3-4
This week we focus on high level communication as leaders seek to implement changes in their organizations. This same heart attitude manifests itself in organizational dynamics in troubling ways.
Leaders are great at seeing the big picture of the organization (hopefully). They understand the constraints that the organization faces both internally and externally, and they see how everything fits together. So, when they try to initiate change and encounter employee resistance, it can be easy for leaders to arrogantly conclude that employees are dumb and/or rebellious. But employees are down deep in the details and can feel their leaders are uncaring and unappreciative. It takes humility on both sides to listen to each other.
As leaders, even our best plans may be flawed. Do we really have everything figured out? Is our plan that perfect? Might someone who actually has to carry out the plan in the details of organizational life have some thoughts? What about our customers—would they really like our plan? Above all, what about the Lord? If we really are ambassadors for Christ, if we really believe that our eternal destiny is in his hands, why would we allow ourselves to be offended when any agenda of ours gets thwarted?
The fact is we are not home yet and this life is temporary. As Abraham did, let’s travel lightly. He was looking toward his promised home. So should we.
