Psychological statistics

For this assignment, you need to create a data set by yourself that has the specific characteristics listed, create a histogram for the raw scores, convert the scores into Z scores using SPSS, create a histogram of the Z scores, and then write a short (225 to 250 words long) paper. You must submit the paper in Webcourses in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx) with the SPSS output (raw scores w/histogram, Z scores w/histogram) for your made-up data set by the due date. The SPSS output can either be screenshots or you can cut-and-paste it at the end of your paper. Your paper, the SPSS analyses, and the made-up data set must be your own work. We will be using Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism.

Hypothetical Scenario:

Pretend you are researcher interested in assessing in studying the texting habits of college students. You ask a random sample of 60 students to tell you how many texts per day they send.

Data Set Creation:

Make up a data set that contains 60 numbers representing the number of texts per day each student reports sending

SPSS Analyses:

Find the mean and standard deviation for the raw scores
Transform the raw scores into Z scores
Find the mean and standard deviation for the Z scores
This video will show you how to do these first three things in SPSS:

Histogram Comparison:

Create a histogram of the raw scores (use same procedure as in Lab 2)
Create a histogram of the Z scores
APA Style Paper:

Write a brief (225 to 250 words long) summary of your SPSS analyses. In the paper, you should write from the perspective of being the researcher yourself and include the following:

Explanation of what the study was about – you must write as if you are the researcher conducting the study in the hypothetical scenario above, but you must use your own words to explain things. Don’t just copy the paragraph I gave you, but make sure you are using the same basic scenario.
Explanation of what the numbers in the data set represent
Report of the mean and standard deviation for the raw scores
Report of the mean and standard deviation for the Z scores
Description of any notable characteristics of the data that you can see by looking at the histogram for the raw scores and the histogram for the Z scores. In particular, you should describe the shape of the distributions, any skewness or asymmetry, any outliers, or other unusual data. Are the distributions unimodal, bimodal, multimodal, or is there no mode?
APA Style: Please refer to pp. 96-97 in the textbook to see how Z scores are reported in research articles.
As you progress though the course, we will be teaching you how to write up your SPSS analyses in APA style as we go. These are the relevant general guidelines for this assignment:

Be sure to explain your figures (e.g., graphs) and tables to the reader
Assume the reader will not look at these items if you do not explicitly point out important aspects of them
It might help to think of this process as describing the figures and tables to a person who can’t see them and whom you would have to lead through step-by-step
