For the last major assignment of the course, the Final (Paper 2) Theory Analysis, you will analyze a theory. As with the Midterm (Paper 1), you are learning about the paper early so that you have plenty of time to work on it. In addition, each of the coming weeks will introduce various parts of the paper and these parts will help you prepare to write your Final (Paper 2) Theory Analysis. Right now you are given an overview of the assignment.
For the Midterm (Paper 1), you analyzed a communication conflict. For the Final (Paper 2) Theory Analysis you will be analyzing a communication theory. So pull out your textbook and start thumbing through the chapters. You will be exploring what has happened to a particular theory since our textbook was written in 2014. Some of our theories originated before the invention of the personal computer, the internet or social media! Have scholars updated these theories to incorporate new technology? In addition, some of the theories were tested on limited populations. For example, many of the theories were only tested on white males in the U.S. What would the theory show if applied to females internationally?
You get to look at the theory and the research and make recommendations as to what should be done to fix the holes and improve the theory. You are the future of communication theory! The world is open to you. Have fun!
Note: If you need a review of how to find scholarly sources, refer back to the Midterm (Paper 1) information on resources and citations.
To start, select a theory from the textbook. It can be a theory that we have covered so far in class, or one that we have not yet covered.
Final (Paper 2) Theory Analysis
Use the following bolded headings to organize the sections of your paper. Underneath each heading you’ll find a description of what information needs to be included in that section of the paper.
Introduction
Briefly describe what will be covered in the paper. Include your thesis and a long preview sentence that lists all the headings in your paper. For example: “This paper will define the Genderlect Theory, it’s goal and Approach, give Tannen’s background, the current status of Genderlect Theory since 2014, an evaluation of the theory using the Seven Theory Criteria, how to improve the theory and conclude with what can be learned about communication from this theory analysis.”
Theory Definition
Summarize the theory and define the theory terms.
Goal and Approach(es)
Define the goal of the theory. Describe which Approach(es) the theory comes from and why the theory falls into that Approach(es).
Author(s)
Give the background of the author(s), when and why they developed the theory. Why did you choose this theory?
Current Theory Status
Research and describe how the theory has been used since 2014. Use your online library research skills to find scholarly research articles that are related to your theory. This section will answer questions such as “Who is using this theory today?” What new Contexts and Approaches has the theory been applied to since 2014? What modifications to the theory have been made since 2014?
Theory Evaluation
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the theory based on the Seven Theory Evaluation Criteria. These Seven Criteria can be found in the back of each theory chapter in your textbook. (Scope, Logical Consistency, Parsimony, Utility, Testability, Heurism and Test of Time). You can also include other factors such as the amount of evidence supporting the theory or if it can be applied to multiple populations.
Improvements to Theory
Identify ways to improve the theory. For example:
Maybe this theory comes from the Empirical Approach and you recommend it be studied from and Interpretive or Critical Approach. Justify your suggestions.
Is there a way to expand the theory’s application? Perhaps the theory has only been studied in interpersonal encounters but you see it could be applied to small groups or in organizational settings. Maybe the theory has only been researched in face-to-face encounters but there could be benefits if it was used to study online encounters in social media. Perhaps only participants of a certain age were studied in the past and you would recommend a wider age range be researched. Don’t just make the suggested improvement but also describe why you think your suggested improvement would be beneficial.
Does the theory have a hole in which you could suggestion the addition of a new element? Remember Dramatism Theory added a new piece called “Attitude” to the Agent, Agency, Act, etc., making the 5 pointed pentad a 6 pointed hexad. You could even make up a new vocabulary word for your new addition to the theory.
Remember to back up your suggestions with substance and depth of thought.
Conclusion
Give a brief summary of the main points of the paper. Include what you learned about communication from doing this paper.
References
Include all sources cited in-text as quotes or paraphrases. Give the full references using APA format. Use a minimum of 5 scholarly sources. You can use our textbook as one of the five scholarly sources.
Note: If you need a review of how to cite scholarly sources use the owlpurdue APA citation guide (Links to an external site.).
The paper needs to meet the following requirements:
4-5 pages (including References section)
Single spaced
12 point font Times New Roman
1″ margins
A minimum of 5 scholarly research sources cited (textbook can be included)
APA format for the in-text citations
APA format in the References section
The whole paper does not need to be in APA format, just your citations.
Remember to use the APA citation guide to make sure you have all the right information and the periods are in the right place.
Don’t worry, your paper will be the right length if you have included everything that is required. Please look at the rubric for this assignment. to make sure you have included everything you need to get an “A” on the paper.
Just like we did with the Midterm (Paper 1),
you will Peer Review a classmate’s Final (Paper 2) Draft
and once you have written the final version of your Final (Paper 2) Theory Analysis, you will also produce a multimedia recorded presentation of the main points of your paper to share with me and with your classmates, then give them feedback on their presentations
Remember, just breathe, we are taking this assignment a piece at a time. Over the next few weeks we’ll do the following exercises that will be pieces of the paper.
Read Scholarly Articles
Check Current Theory Status
Evaluate and Improve the Theory
Create an Outline
First Draft and Unicheck
Peer Review
Check the syllabus calendar for all due dates.
First, choose a theory you like. I look forward to reading your insights and recommendations on your Final (Paper 2) Theory Analysis and Presentation!
