Pubic hearings

Public hearings are one of the most important parts of the legislative process. A committee of legislators invites the public to speak or submit written testimony concerning their views on a bill.

Below is the link to the recording of the RI House Judiciary Committee’s hearing on H5006, the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act (EACA). You can fast forward the first part of the hearing when other bills are discussed. Start at about 28 minutes in and watch the opening presentation by the sponsor, Rep. Kazarian, and watch about an hour of testimony – feel free to skip around – the hearing went on for about 4 hours.

After watching about an hour of testimony, respond to the following:

What arguments in favor of the bill were most persuasive?
What arguments against it were most persuasive?
Could you see yourself testifying at a legislative hearing on a bill that is important to you? Would you prefer to speak or submit written testimony?
