This week one of our chapters explains how to decrease behavior with punishment. As you may have guessed, this is a controversial subject.
This week we’ll have an Open Discussion your views on punishment and potential ethical issues. Although the focus of your discussion on the topic is ‘open,’ your discussion should be filled with terms and material from the text to support your opinion. This is the method used in psychology – we form opinions based on knowledge and then reference that knowledge to defend our position.
You may want to discuss the topic of punishment in a behavioral setting as explained in our text chapter 15.
Or you may choose to discuss the use of punishment in child-rearing or as a mechanism for people to follow driving laws, drinking laws, etc.
You may choose to find an article on the Internet or just create your own example/s.
Think of any application of punishment in a scenario that you choose and then describe your perspective in at least 300 words in detail. Longer posts are welcome but must not exceed 500 words. Please note that length does not equal a high or low grade …. the substance and thoroughness of your discussion determines your grade.
Our discussion must include ample relevant text-based terms and concepts so please explain the principle of punishment, types of punishers, factors that influence the effectiveness of punishment, and the pitfalls of punishment for the example/s you choose. Model your sharing on the information in our text.
