1 – Compare the English and Spanish colonization of the Americas. How did racial formation vary in each instance?
2- Discuss some of the legacies of destructive practices wrought on black families during slavery. Include at least two specific examples mentioned in the text in your answer.
3- Using the concepts of cultural appropriation and the white gaze, explain what the textbook authors mean when they discuss how the dominant art world often serves to “exoticize” people of colour. Why is this negative for people and artists of color? Illustrate your answer using at least two examples.
4- Discuss the relationship between hate groups and the Internet. How do white nationalists and white supremacists use the Internet to spread their messages? How can the Internet also be used as a tool for racial democracy? Based on your assessment, argue whether the Internet has been positive or negative for multiethnic democracy in America.
5- Describe at least two ways in which the early U.S. colonists expanded and how they viewed the native peoples who lived there. In what ways did these shape the belief of Manifest Destiny in the nineteenth century?
