Survivor: American Literature Essay Edition
Final Due (uploaded to GeorgiaView): Tuesday, March 28, at 11:59 pm
This assignment requires you to survive—figuratively, that is. Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and you should, because you will be graded on it), is to find a way to survive on a deserted island populated with no one else but you and the various characters we have read about this semester. For some unexplained reason, Jeff Probst has given you sole control over who gets voted off the island on this particular day. In your essay, you must make a case for two characters to vote off and two characters that you would definitely want to keep. Your choices are:
Walt Whitman
Jim Smiley
Mark Twain’s Adam
Mark Twain’s Eve
Peyton Farquhar
Sylvia
The Ornithologist
Desiree
Armand
Booker T. Washington
W.E.B. DuBois
The Cook
The Captain
The Correspondent
The Oiler
The man from “To Build a Fire”
The dog from “To Build a Fire”
The “soft-hearted Sioux”
Mr. Haskins
Mr. Butler
Mr. Council
Mrs. Council
Neighbor Rosicky
Mrs. Wright
Any of the citizens of Spoon River
This paper is an essay and should be written in essay format, with a strong thesis statement and ample supporting evidence for why each character would or would not be an asset to your team based on their experiences “surviving” the various troubles they have faced in the readings.. Use specific examples (including direct quotations) from the text, along with your thoughts about those examples, to make the case for each character (four in total).
Suggested length: 1500-2000 words, double-spaced (anything less than 1500 words will automatically receive a “D” or below). Your final paper must be uploaded to GeorgiaView in order to receive credit for this assignment. I will deduct ten points from your final paper grade for each day that your paper is late.
