The story of a returning American Vietnam Veteran has been imagined by Ojibwa author, Louise Erdrich, in “The Red Convertible” and by Andrew Lam in “Slingshot.”
Note: “Slingshot” is from Birds of Paradise Lost. This is one of the required texts for the course.
When Henry returns to the reservation from Vietnam, he confronts the impossibility and futility of returning home. Exile becomes an internalized condition as Henry is displaced from his own family and even his own body. Veteran, Uncle Steve also is unable to return home and seeks a connection to his past in a Vietnamese restaurant.
In a multi-paragraph 1500 – 2000 essay, identify and analyze the dimensions of Henry and Uncle Steve’s displacement and their attempt at resettlement after the war. Using Marlante’s book offer insights into the complexity and trauma of war for this Native American soldier who fought in Vietnam and for Uncle Steve who is trying to come to terms with his past.
