One part on the Nguyen reading I found particularly interesting was how Vietnam veterans were treated poorly upon their return to the United States after the war. People in the United States were so humiliated by the country’s loss to a “third world” power and the unpopular nature of the war by its conclusion meant that most Americans were eager to forget the conflict and look towards the future. However, the thousands of veterans returning to the states who struggled to acclimate back to “normal” life served as a constant reminded of this horrible, unpopular, humiliating conflict. Hence, it’s no surprise that there was nothing Americans wanted to do less than “remember the troops” and pay homage to their sacrifices. Even today, I feel like the attitude towards Vietnam veterans remains largely unchanged, and the sight of struggling old men on the street with Vietnam veteran hats has become a fairly common spectacle. Whether Americans should have “showed more respect” to the veterans returning from Vietnam is another question, but regardless of the morals of the situation, the fact remains that veterans of the Vietnam War returned home without much of a “hero’s welcome” (162), as Americans collectively tried to “put the war behind them and look to the future” (162).
