DIRECTIONS
Respond to one of the two prompts below. You must provide specific examples and at least one direct quote from Woolf’s text in your response. (You may refer to both/either A Room of One’s Own and “Professions for Women.”)
Additional note: This is not an essay assignment, which means it does not have to follow essay structure nor have a thesis statement (although it’s fine if you prefer to do it that way). Please do, however, respond in complete sentences and well-developed paragraphs.
1. Woolf is addressing women of her own class (upper middle-class, educated, white). Are differences in class and privilege still significant for women writers today? Could we apply Woolf’s ideas about the obstacles facing more privileged female writers of her own time to women writers, artists, or intellectuals from diverse backgrounds (past or present)?
2. Especially today, at a time of economic hardship for many, do women have the same material advantages as men? Are issues such as child rearing, wage disparity, or the division of household work still relevant in terms of women pursuing their ambitions? Relate these questions to some of the specific points Woolf raises about women and writing.
