Reflection is “a form of mental processing with a purpose and/or
anticipated outcome that is applied to relatively complex or unstructured ideas
for which there is not an obvious solution.” (Moon, 1999, p. 23) Moon believes
that reflection should serve a purpose and have an anticipated outcome. It is
used to help students evaluate the quality of materials and sources, build
theories from observation, and reflect in and take responsibility for their own
learning and development.
Many fields—such as education, psychology, and leadership—use
reflection as a means for professional growth and development. When managers
reflect on their actions, they can determine whether and how they influenced
others, impacted decisions, and improved their organizations and themselves.
This type of reflection enables managers to increase their own effectiveness
and to provide useful feedback and guidance to those who report to them.
This week, you will reflect on the main themes of the course and the
use of reframing, sensemaking, and metaphors to further your understanding of
organizations. This reflection will help you assess what you learned this term
and how it impacted your thinking. It should also help solidify your new
knowledge and skills into becoming a part of you and how you function at work,
at home, and in the world.
Learning Objectives
This week, you will:
Analyze the impact of reframing and
metaphors on personal and organizational perspectives
Apply reframing and metaphors to national
and global business relations
Apply Bolman and Deal’s four frames and
Morgan’s metaphors to organizations
Create a report on an organization with a
storyline, analysis, and recommendations for change using the reframing
model and metaphors
Skills
You will develop the following skills:
Analyze organizations
Apply theoretical concepts to practical
cases
HINT:
First,
analyze and explain how reframing (Boleman & Deal 4 frame model) and metaphors have changed your
perspective on organizations, if at all. Why or why not?
Second,
explain how sensemaking has added to your skills as a manager and how you
plan to use it in your daily work?
Third,
explain in what way reframing, sensemaking, and/or metaphors can assist in
improving national and global business relations. For example, would there
be any situation across cultures or national regions that a metaphor might
better create an understanding for the parties involved? Provide an
example for each (national and global) by using one of the frames and/or
metaphors.
Finally,
explain how the exposure to the new models and techniques this term has
helped you grow and develop as a manager, researcher, and leader of social
change?
