In Unit 3 you take a side on your chosen issue and construct and argument defending your position to your audience. For your argument, you have two approaches to choose from. You can write a classical argument where you take a position and defend it, or you can write a proposal argument where you propose a solution to a problem and explain why that solution is the best choice. We will discuss both options together as a class.
Regardless of which approach you choose, your essay should include the following information:
A clear, argumentative thesis based on the Toulmin Method (Claim + Reasons)
A brief overview of the problem or topic
Backing and justification to support your claim or proposal
A section identifying counterarguments and responding to counterarguments to your claim
Your argument must be structured around a clear thesis statement and remain grounded in the research you have collected over the course of the semester. You should use 7-10 sources in your argumentative essay.
Remember that in academic writing, your opinion must be supported by sources and should be positioned within a scholarly conversation. This means your sources should represent a variety of perspectives (including some you disagree with) and should be integrated into your writing as support for your own perspective using paraphrase, summary, and quotation. This a formal academic essay and should follow the vocabulary and grammar conventions of Standard American English.
Tips for Success
Avoid thinking of your topic as a pro-con debate (i.e. people are either for or veganism or for or against labeling GMO foods). All of the potential topics in this class are nuanced and complicated. You will write a much more successful argument essay if you can acknowledge those complications.
As much as possible, name your allies and your opponents. It is very easy to use general terms like “some people” or “those who disagree,” but these kinds of phrases lead to weak and often fallacious arguments. Connect your claims and your counterarguments to specific sources to strengthen your argument.
You may need to expand your research for this paper to make sure you are fully supporting your argument. Consider what questions readers will likely have about your claim and focus your research on answering those questions.
Formatting
This paper should be submitted as a .doc or .docx file or as a PDF. Your work should be double spaced with one-inch margins. Use Calibri or Times New Roman font, size 12 for all text.
Include an APA title page and a header for your paper. Additionally, you must include a Reference page with an APA citation for the sources you use in your paper. Your Title page and Reference page do not count towards the page count of your essay. You do not need to include an abstract.
