Introduction
Receiving and evaluating contrasting information from multiple sources is a key learning objective for your IAS education
(Links to an external site.)
. This assignment asks you to consider how contrasting representations of Woody Guthrie might be related to differing political purposes to which the image of the singer is being put. Also, equally important, the assignment will give you an opportunity to learn a little (more?) bout a very famous American folk singer – Woody Guthrie. I’m pretty sure that any course you that references music and politics in the 20th century US is likely to reference Guthrie (and Pete Seeger who is mentioned briefly in the information below and you will encounter later in the quarter). Finally, the assignment helps prepare you to analyze different versions of Guthrie’s This Land is Your Land

Write a one and a half to two page paper (double spaced) in which you compare and contrast the representation of Woody Guthrie in the short biography from the Oklahoma Hall of Fame with the representation of Woody Guthrie in the short NPR profile.
In responding to the prompt, write a paragraph or two on each of the following bullet points. Make sure that you refer directly to information from the programs to illuminate your points.
What facts about Guthrie do these two programs agree on? So what can you say confidently about the life of Woody Guthrie (at least based on this assignment – many of you would have known about Guthrie before)?
What do you learn about the political climate that Guthrie during which Guthrie was creating his music?
How do the two programs represent Guthrie’s political ideals?
If someone only heard the information from the Oklahoma Hall of Fame or they only heard the information from the NPR profile what types of assumptions might they make about Woody Guthrie’s political ideals.
