1. Research and find a current (within the last six months) crisis situation. This must be a crisis that was not part of the week 1/unit 1 forum discussions. If you select a topic that has already been part of a discussion, you will receive a grade of “0” for the original post portion. Discuss the crisis and identify any potential problems that can/could result from the initial crisis. Be sure to include in the discussion what was handled correctly and what could have been done differently. You need to have at least two supporting, scholarly references.

– Hi class,

Inflation, COVID-19, Ukraine, Gun Violence. If you turn on the news, these are all topics we have grown familiar with, but another crisis has formed at the root of these crises. Our nation is experiencing unprecedented numbers of Mental Health crises. It is an ongoing pandemic in itself. While the current state of affairs is not the underlying cause of this crisis, the decline in mental health has intensified by the Covid pandemic (2022). The pandemic strained many relationships and has taken a personal toll on families. As Americans, we spend many hours outside of the home, but the shutdown forced families to spend every minute of every day together. It strained all kinds of relationships with some evidence finding divorce initiation increasing to 34% in the US (2022). Aside from the strain on family and home life, people in our community are living with fear and anxiety brought to light by the pandemic. The mental health crisis extends far beyond the realm of COVID-19.

Since April 2022, millions of refugees have fled Ukraine seeking safety from the Russian attacks. 80% of the refugees are women and children. While the Russian-Ukraine war has gained global attention, little attention has been given to the associated mental health crisis for child and adolescent refugees (Cai et al., 2022). Many of these adolescents are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders. They’re exposed to life-threatening dangers and separated from their parents in their journey to neighboring countries. An international collaboration has been initiated among pediatricians and mental health professionals in Europe to provide help for adolescents.

Without treatment, mental health consequences could lead to disabilities, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, incarceration, suicide, and poor quality of life. Its time for society to streamline the seriousness of the Mental Health Crisis. Humans are equipped to self-regulate, but that’s not always the best or easiest way to cope. The greatest way to handle and cope with a mental health crisis is to offer support to your community and the people around you. We can offer support through texts, phone calls, and emails. We can still find ways to be there for each other in this unprecedented time of chaos.

– Hello classmates,

Over the past six months, the conflict in Ukraine has impacted the global economy; however, the one area that seems to be getting hit the hardest is the food industry, namely the grain department. Both Russia and Ukraine make up roughly thirty percent of all grain and wheat exports. Both countries are facing either action that has hurt Russia’s economy, or for Ukraine, it’s been the constant attacks by Russia that have hurt grain transportation to the ports. “On 18th May 2022, Ukraine’s Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Solskyi said in an international conference that Ukraine’s grain production is likely to drop by 50% this year, and the sowing of winter crops will also be seriously affected” (Sun, 2022).

The situation is clearly not going to improve, making the grain shortage a long-term crisis. As long as this conflict continues, it opposes a significant problem to ever getting the grain supply chain back on track. As the crisis goes on, specific food prices will keep increasing, and countries will begin to explore growing their grain; however, this would also require resources and financial stability, which some countries do not have at this time. Granted, growing their own grain is a solution; it is not a short-term solution and will take years to see the results. It should also be mentioned that this crisis is going to gain more momentum, namely because the world’s population is rapidly growing, and more countries are trying to feed their population, and as of right now, not every country can do that either because of the grain shortage and because of supply and demand.

Research and scenarios have run that if the grain shortage does not improve, the effects could last several years and impact the world’s economy. These scenarios all play out differently from least severe to extreme and what has been found is that the world must make some serious changes to avoid long-term grain issues. Kovtoniuk and Molchanova (2022) explain the following:

Mitigation of the negative effects on the world grain market can be achieved through compliance with the principles of free trade and reduction of trade barriers in the grain market can help mitigate the effects of the crisis on the world grain market. (p.141)

One thing that could’ve been done differently is that the countries of the world that saw this conflict could have potentially started storing extra amounts of grain to help lessen the effects of the shortage in their countries. Unfortunately, in this crisis, at this point, nothing has been done correctly to help lessen the blow; some countries are trying to grow their own grain, while others are looking to buy grain in bulk. However, the one scenario where the shortage could be appropriately handled is if Ukraine regains access to its ports to begin distributing grain back out to the world. But, again, all of these long-term solutions will not have any immediate effect; if the world really wants to help combat the grain shortage, the best possible way is to help in the war in Ukraine.

2. Research and find an active/current EEOC case (must be within the last six months).

Discuss the case in detail. Do you agree or disagree with the outcome of the case? Why/why not? Be sure to include in the discussion an active link to the case. References must be in APA format.

– Hi Class,

In August of 2022, a suit was filed by a female flight attendant against Skywest airlines for sexual harassment in the workplace. The female employee was repeatedly subjected to sexual comments from managers and fellow co-workers making the work environment hostile. The male-dominated parts department made jokes about rape and prostitution which demeaned the female employee. The EEOC (2022) states, “multiple employees and at least one manager made crude sexual comments, including the suggestion that the female employee make money via prostitution”. Once she filed the suit, she was placed on administrative leave and was never told to return to work. The female employee felt she had no other choice but to resign from the airline. The female employee felt unsafe at work, forcing her to act against the harassment and file suit with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The workplace harassment violated the laws set in place in 1964. The airline didn’t handle the sexual harassment against the female employee fairly because the only employee suffering consequences was the victim. Unwanted sexual comments, advances, and innuendos in the workplace should never be tolerated by any employee or company. If the airline would have handled the behavior of the male employees properly, a suit would have never been filed.

– Hey Class,

The case that is being highlighted is Plains and Copperhead Pipelines being sued by the EEOC due to discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, and/or sex (US EEOC, 2022). The case is that 16 men working for the oil and gas pipeline company in New Mexico were being discriminated against for their skin color or national origin. According to Rahman (2022), “That included using racial slurs to describe Black people, epithets about Mexican, Hispanic, and Native American people, and harassment based on their sex.” The supervisors in the companies were using derogatory terms and harassing the 16 minority workers and then tried to explain it as boys being boys (US EEOC, 2022). They employees were also being retaliated against for filing complaints on the supervisors. The EEOC filed a federal lawsuit and the companies involved came to an agreement to pay $1.75 million. Along with a civil penalty the EEOC (2022) states,

The consent decree settling the suit requires the Plains and Copperhead companies to review and update their discrimination and retaliation policies, as well as post an anti-discrimination notice. The companies will also provide training on Title VII harassment and retaliation to all of their employees, including a separate, more detailed training to managers and human resources staff.

I agree with the outcome of the particular case. The civil penalties levied by the EEOC are only just a tip of the iceberg. Rahman (2022) stated, ” the companies also agreed to fire the alleged harasser and discipline the managers and supervisors who allegedly retaliated.” This also needed to happen in this case because if the managers were still working there then it is likely that a situation like this could have happened again. There also is no room for discrimination, regardless if they tried to rationalize it, and any manger that does discriminate should be terminated. This type of behavior is uncalled for and any company should not allow such things to happen.
