Research Ethics Assignment
This assignment is your written analysis of
the research ethics of the U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study at Tuskegee. To complete this assignment, read the
assigned chapter on ethics in your text and view the Tuskegee Study video, The Deadly Deception. This video and several additional resources
for this paper can be found online. Use additional resources as needed. The Deadly Deception video and
all resources cited in this paper, including other videos, must have in-text
citations. All resources must be
included on the reference list. Read chapters 6 and 7 in the APA Publication
Manual for instructions.
Write a paper that discusses the issues/questions
identified below. Begin your paper with
a brief introduction of the study and end with a brief conclusion. You must use
headings for each section of your paper.
Please note that no heading is used for the introduction in the APA
style. Refer to the APA Publication
Manual, 3.03 Levels of Headings, and the examples of heading format in Table
3.1 (page 62). This paper must be written using APA format, a maximum of 3
pages, excluding the cover page and reference list. Do not include an abstract. Your reference
list and in-text citations must include all videos, articles, books, and any

Write a brief introduction to set the context
for the paper.
Ethical Principles (20%)
Discuss the principles of respect for persons,
beneficence, and justice (what are they and why are they important?). Discuss
how these principles were violated or upheld in the Tuskegee study.
Nuremberg Code and Belmont Report (15%)
Discuss the elements of the Nuremberg Code of
1947 (How did the Code come about? What are the elements of the Code?) Describe
which elements were violated in the Tuskegee study and how they were violated.
What is the Belmont Report and why was it written?
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (15%)
Discuss the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights and what, if any, violations of these rights occurred in the study.
Tuskegee Study Nurse (20%)
Describe the nurse in this study and her role
in the study. Who is this nurse? Discuss how she dealt with the potential or
actual ethical conflicts. Were her actions
justified, ethical or not? Consider the context of her race, profession, and
gender when you deliberate her actions.
Researchers’ Behavior in Tuskegee Study
Compared to Present Day Expectations (20%)
Discuss the differences in the researchers’
behavior from this study era (early 1930s until early 1970s) compared to the
expectations for researchers’ ethical behavior in the present time. How have expectations for researchers been
influenced by the Nuremberg trials, Nuremberg Code, the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, and the Belmont Report?
