The general social issue that interested Glaspell was the oppression of women in society, but of course this general interest can also be broken into a variety of sub-issues, like Silencing of women’s voices, social devaluation of their viewpoints. Step 1: Research in Electronic Databases
Go to the MTC Library webpage
Using our MTC Library’s online electronic database Academic Search Premier, locate a peer-reviewed journal article on a social issue related to Glaspell’s work that you feel deepens our understanding of that issue in some way and contains substantive information you can relate either directly to Glaspell’s work OR that indirectly relates by bringing our understanding of that issue into the 21st century.
It may be that the article you locate . . .
discusses recent research on the issue
provides new information on the history of the issue
reports on new insights from the fields of sociology or psychology on causes or effects of the problem
provides statistics that demonstrates increases, decreases, or some other change in the prevalence of this problem in the U.S.
provides an interview with an expert on the issue
provides in-depth coverage of a case that has brought national attention to the issue.

Step 2: Research Online
Using a general online search engine (such as Google), locate a recent news article (within the last year) that covers an issue raised by Glasspell a/o the new media sources we are exploring. NOTE: a news article should be from an actual news source (not just any webpage) and preferably be reporting on an incident that has recently happened.
This article may cover a topic such as domestic or intimate partner violence/abuse, stereotyping of women and gender bias, silencing of women or social devaluation of their viewpoints, etc.
Paragraph 2 of SWA 7: Introduce and Annotate the News Article
In the first sentence, identify the source (title) and author(s) of the article.
Summarize the article, making sure to mention main points and ideas or topics covered (approx. 4-6 sentences).
Evaluate the article, discussing features of the source that make it a good one to use in an academic assignment (approx. 3-5 sentences).
End this paragraph by connecting the information found in this source with Glaspell’s work a/o the new media sources we have been discussing.
Step 3: MLA Documentation and Formatting Practice
Be sure to use MLA formatting (as you would for all assignments). You may wish to review the MLA Format handout on D2L.
Provide in-text citations for any quote or paraphrase you use from the articles you discuss (and from Glaspell’s works or the new media sources if you referred to them)
Create a works cited page listing the article (and Glaspell’s works or the new media sources if you referred to them); for help, consult EAA p. 582 models #10 and #11 or the Purdue OWL MLA Works Cited: Electronic Sources page.
