INSTRUCTIONS:
This research project involves analyzing a societal context that you think would benefit from civil communication practices. You will write a paper that utilizes information from the course, additional academic sources, and a problem-solution approach to explaining the benefit that civility would bring to the situation. Sample societal contexts include: a workplace environment where conflict happens, a family situation where there is disagreement or an argument, a neighborhood conflict that causes neighbors to take sides, or a governmental issue where political parties cannot agree on an issue.
Project Steps:
Step One: Identify a specific problem that exists because of incivility or a lack of civil communication in your chosen context. Articulate the problem in one sentence and then explain it more fully by offering a specific description of how and why this is a societal problem and how it is connected to incivility. Step one is 1-2 pages.
Step Two: Summarize course readings, class lecture/discussion, and three additional academic sources that you will use to solve the problem. You must use a total of 5 sources in your paper. These sources can be both broad (a more general discussion of civility/incivility) and/or specific (civil listening as explained in the textbook, Poulos’ idea of accidental dialogue, a theory that explains the format, Civil Dialogue). You may use published, academic sources that you find on the topic or you may use the additional resources listed in the first four modules on Canvas. This section of the paper should provide the framework you will use to solve the problem you have identified in step one. Step two is 2-3 pages.
Step Three: Offer a solution to the problem by applying the information in step two to the problem in step one. In other words, form an argument for how civil communication would address and/or solve the identified problem. Step three is 3-4 pages
Your paper must
