Write a short story (minimum 600 words). Follow the following steps and procedures.

Preparation

a. Research short stories (online or in print) and observe their characteristics: theme, plot, characters, type of narrator, use of dialogue, organization into paragraphs. Make notes of good ideas that can be used in your short story.

b. Listen again to the audio in Let’s Listen and note down additional ideas that the story brings to you. If possible, read the short story “The fortune teller” during this step.

c. Choose the theme of the short story.

d. Define the characters and the type of narrator.

e. Define the time (is the narrative set in the present, past, or future)
and the space where the narrative takes place.

f. Make an outline of the story: what the introduction, development, and conclusion will look like; how many paragraphs there will be and what the purpose of each is.

First draft

g. Write your first draft, including title and author.
Review

h. Read your draft aloud and evaluate how it “sounds”: is the reading interesting? Does it stimulate the readers’ curiosity and interest? Make revisions that might make the text more engaging.

i. Check the following areas: spelling, punctuation, paragraphing, clarity in presenting ideas, and consistency in connecting the parts.

j. Make any necessary revisions based on the conclusions drawn during the previous step.
k. Make a final check of the text.
