Your memo should have the following parts:
1) Set up your research question.
• What is your research question? (“How” and “What” questions work best for qualitative research.)
• What is your sociological hunch about why it is interesting or what you might find?
• So what? Why should people care about your project?
2) Explain exactly what you are going to do and how will you access your data source. What selection criteria are you using tochoose which people and locations will be part of your data set?
3) By now, you should have done some reading on your topic. Explain what patterns you see in studies on your topic. How might you add to these conversations? Just offer initial thoughts. Your thinking will evolve over the course of the semester.
