Big Data is a large collection of ever-growing data that is massive in size (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Big data is used in many healthcare facilities to store all sorts of information from the past, present, and future. In the operating room we use big data to track the busiest and slowest months of surgery, how many of each type of surgery we have done in a certain time frame, track materials used and ordered, and so much more. With all this information that is stored we can better prepare for the future in the operating room. Another definition of big data is research that reuses routinely collected medical data (Teodorowski et al., 2023). This definition really covers what we do in the operating room with a lot of data that is collected.

One challenge with big data is that a lot of the data is unstructured data. Unstructured data represents up to 75% of an organization’s data that is lost, overlooked, or not properly stored (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). When this happens trends and patterns are hard to follow, making it harder to use the available data. There are five big data capabilities which include “analytical capability for patterns of care, unstructured data analytical capability, decision support capability, predictive capability, and traceability” (Wang et al., 2018). A big problem with unstructured data and the large volume of data gathered is that it adds to the complexity of healthcare. This can add additional medical costs and time for patients and nursing informaticist (Wang et al., 2018).

In order to assess all the data coming in, nursing informaticists need the proper training and knowledge to organize and use all the data effectively. One way our department uses time and resources wisely to assist in organizing big data is having one person dedicated to organizing charts and charges. By doing so more information is being input into the computer database where it needs to be. According to Glassman quality and safety education for nurses includes understanding the database/ electronic health record, knows how to navigate the system, and uses the technology to support clinical decision making and reduce errors.

post 2:
“Healthcare is a highly information intensive industry with valuable datasets that are massive, quick, and sophisticated for healthcare providers to manage, process and analyze with present-day methodologies” (Goyal et al., 2022). A great benefit of using big data as part of a clinical system is giving patients a more advanced and better quality of care. Health care team is able to assess patients’ data from different locations, different results, and history within a time manner and help patients faster and efficiently. While working currently at a pediatric hospital, once patient is admitted, the healthcare team can see all patient’s appointment notes, past medical history, prescriptions, allergies, and much more since all the hospital has the same system. Meanwhile, making it safer to patients and the healthcare team. However, there are always risks of using big data as part of a clinical system. Risks can come from lack of training to hackers and cyber attacks. Big data contains patients’ personal information and so as their extent medical history, and there is always a risk of hackers stealing patients’ information, such as their social security numbers for their own benefit. Furthermore, lack of employee training can be very damaging for the company. One strategy that I have seen working very well at the hospital is their IT training during nurse’s orientation and nurses having a “super user” course. Super users are floor nurses that are very knowledgeable about our system and if we have some kind of question during our shift we can them instead of calling the IT department all the time. That has helped me a lot during my transition in the hospital and allow me to use the system to its capacity.
