Rewrite and Explanation – English class

Part one:
Browse the attached file “Do you Speak American”, and imagine that you want to share the ideas in
your text with a wider audience in a “less academic” context. Rewrite the text
to make it appropriate for one of the audiences and formats below, considering
language, organization, and page appearance. Then, compose a personal blog post for your friends and
family—200 words minimum.
Part two: Write an 500 words minimum explanation of how you rewrote the
original text for a new audience and context. What choices did you make when
changing the text? Describe specific examples from your rewrite and the
original to describe changes you made in vocabulary, sentence structure,
organization, and design. Explain why you made these changes, using
sociolinguistic concepts we learned in class (e.g., register, speech community,
prescriptivism and descriptivism. Write appropriately for an academic audience,
considering language choices, organization, and formatting.
