. Your job is to evaluate how well Brooks his argument (not whether you agree with him).
What I want you to tell me is how well/effectively Brooks makes his argument.

The rhetorical analysis essay asks you to do three things extremely important for success in this class and in life:
1. Understand an argument that someone is making
2. Critique the argument that someone is making
3. Make your own argument based on your critique

You can think about this in a few ways:
What exactly is the arugment that Brooks is making? What is he trying to say?
Does it seem like Brooks knows his audience well? Is he writing for them?
Each audience expects different things. We can assume that Brooks would have written the article much differently if he was writing for the people who read Guns and Ammo than he does for his audience of the New York Times.
Does he use the rhetorical appeals well?
Ethos: Does he seem competent enough to write about this? Does he have experience with the subject matter? Does it seem like he’s got good character? Does it seem like he’s trying to do a good hing by writing this piece?
Pathos: How does his audience need to feel in order to believe what he’s saying? Does he do a good job getting his audience into the right state of mind? Does he play to their emotions in a way that would get them to beleive what he’s saying?
Logos: Does the argument he’s making make sense? Does he use enough evidence/examples to prove his point?
Kairos: Is the argument made at the right time, or does it come too early or late?
Evaluation Requirements
Your evaluation (the content of your essay) should be based on:
1. How effectively Brooks engages his audience, and why
a. Make sure you identify who you think his audience is
2. How effectively Brooks uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos, and Kairos, and why
3. How effectively Brooks uses evidence to support his argument (which may be included in your evaluation of ethos, pathos, and logos), and why
Essay Requirements
Your essay should include (structural, organizational elements):
1. 4-5 pages of double-spaced, 12pt, Times New Roman text with 1-inch margins and no spaces between paragraphs
2. An introduction that includes a thesis (the argument you’re making about the effectiveness of Brooks’s argument), your clear explanation of Brooks’ argument, and a brief preview of the support that you will give your argument
3. A body that explains in detail the argument that you’re making with examples from your chosen text
4. A conclusion that summarizes your argument, how you’ve supported that argument, and ends with something interesting – something that if the reader had to keep reading, they would want to. This can take many forms.
A couple of things to note:
· In critiquing Brooks’s argument, do your best to use the tools you have to make a good argument yourself!
· You do not have to cite the article in APA or any documentation format
· Your essay should not be about whether you agree with Brooks in the arguments that he’s making
