Role of language

After reading about different language learning narratives and about how being in a new environment has affected the authors’ relationships and choices, as well as doing the three progression exercises, you should have a better understanding of what a language learning narrative is and the function it serves. The authors of the narratives you have read combine reminiscence with analysis. That fusion is the key to success in this form. Memory without analysis is merely anecdote. Analysis without a concrete basis in remembered detail gives no hook for the reader to latch onto. A good narrative will have both.
our essay should address the following questions:When you look back at your life and think about the role of language in your life what experience(s) stand out? Why are these experiences significant for you? Key FeaturesA well-told story: language learning and/or use narratives often set up a situation that needs to be resolved. What’s yours?Vivid details: Details bring a story to life for your reader. Remember to use all five senses and dialogue where appropriate. Look back to David Sedaris, Firoozeh Dumas and the other texts (Li Wei Ng, Maia Aslaksen) you read for examples. Some indication of the narrative’s significance: Not only are you telling a story about how you have learned a language other than your native language, but you are telling why this moment/experience holds significance for you. Why are you choosing this moment to narrate? Why is it important? In what ways are these experiences the same as and/or different than other authors?
