SACR 2910 Essay, (Value 25%)

Maximum 1200-1300 words, Double-spaced, one-inch margins all sides, Word document. (WORDS over the maximum will be penalized proportionally):
This essay requires you to critically evaluate views of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber on:
1- the emergence, development and stability of human societies (20%).
2- how their descriptions and explanations differ depending on type of the society or social systems. Make sure you identify the type of society where emergence, development and
stability are discussed by each of the theorists (60%)
3- critical evaluation of their work (20%).
Spend about 85% of your written work on the works of Marx, Durkheim and Weber and 15% on Jean Jacques Rousseau and Auguste Comte.
You must extensively use the textbook and lectures. words and cite your sources clearly.
Use the Textbook and lectures in your own
You can use either APA or ASA citation format with page number.
Identify the source in the reference page (Authors’ name, year of publication, title of the book, publisher, place of publication).
Whenever you discuss a theorist, a concept and/or make a statement of facts, page number is required. If you don’t cite page number(s) and the date of the lectures, the essay will be significantly penalized.
Textbook citation must be from John Bratton and David Denham (2019). Capitalism and Classical Social Theory. 3rd. edition. Other editions are not acceptable. If cited page numbers do not coincide with the third edition, no mark will be assigned.
Marking: Your essay will be graded for accuracy, completeness, evidence of care and thought, written expression and, most of all, how well you demonstrate a profound understanding and use of the textbook and lectures in the construction of the essay.
Penalty:
1- Poor grammar and syntax (up to 10%).
2- Poor citation and source identification (page number from the textbook and date of
lecture) (up to 30%)
3- Plagiarism (up to 100%)
Sources other than textbook and lectures will not be accepted or considered when assigning
marks.
An electronic version of the essay (in Microsoft Word) must be uploaded on Blackboard’s Drop Box on the due date (April 6).
General Essay Guidelines
A. Margins: One inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, right)
B. Font Size and Type: 12-pt. Times New Roman font
C. Essays must be in Word format.
D. Line Spacing: Double-space throughout the essay, including the title page, body of the
paper and references.
E. Spacing after Punctuation: Space once after commas, colons, and semicolons within
sentences. Insert two spaces after punctuation marks that end sentences.
F. Alignment: Flush justify (align text to both the left and right)
G. Paragraph Indentation: 5 spaces
H. Active voice: As a general rule, use the active voice rather than the passive voice. For
example, use “We (I) predicted that …” rather than “It was predicted that …”
Specific Guidelines
I. Make sure to identify your first and last name, your student ID number and the course number.
J. Before writing your essay, make a skeleton plan.
K. Make sure that the first few sentences identify the purpose.
L. Make sure that the material is well organized in the body, and the last few sentences
highlight the summary.
M. Correct any spelling and/or grammatical errors. You will be marked for your writing
style, grammar, etc.
N. Stay on topic throughout the essay.
O. Show that you have an in-depth understanding of the lectures and Textbook related
chapters.
P. Avoid wordiness and be concise, clear and objective.
Q. A Patch-work of quotations results in a low grade.
R. You must use your own words. Reflect on readings and use your own words.
S. Fully identify your references.
T. Include a bibliography or reference list which is formatted correctly.
U. Do not plagiarize (Read Senate bylaw 31).
V. You will be marked based on your clear understanding of the reading materials
(Textbook) and lectures and the ability to clearly and concisely answer the questions f
